Also known as the “lesser panda,” red pandas aren’t related to giant pandas. Their range does overlap in China, and both eat bamboo, but they aren’t evolutionary cousins.

The first red panda cubs born at Seneca Park Zoo in its history were a pair of males, Lukas and Micha, who arrived on June 20, 2021, to female Starlight. They also were fathered by Willie.

Prior to the triplets, the zoo welcomed two male red panda cubs in June 2023, born to Tián and Rowan. The cubs, William and Robin, were also moved to other accredited zoos in May.

Red Panda Network, an organisation leading global efforts to conserve the animal, estimates between 500 and 1,000 of the species live in Nepal.
