Texas law prohibits leaving a child unattended in a vehicle at any time, especially during extreme heat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 37 children die each year in the U.S. from heatstroke after being left in cars-a number that increases in southern states like Texas.

A reportedly 9-year-old girl was found around 2:25 p.m. at 1201 Mayo Shell Road in the Galena Park area, a police department spokesperson said. The child was left unattended in a vehicle in the parking lot of an industrial complex, according to an X post by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
