The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the No 1 warning signal on Sunday afternoon as Typhoon Danas moved away from the city, with the forecaster also warning residents to be wary of the extreme heat.
Observatory says it will decide on warning signal as potential cyclone looks set to come within 800km of city in coming days.
In more remote areas, challenges include insufficient coverage of monitoring stations, making localised precipitation forecasting difficult, said Professor Meng Gao from Hong Kong Baptist University.
