A Navy vessel named after celebrated gay rights activist and Navy veteran Harvey Milk will no longer carry his name. Milk was the first openly gay politician in California and went on to become a celebrated civil rights pioneer in San Francisco.

Milk, who served in the Navy during the Korean War, became one of the country’s first openly gay elected officials, winning a position on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

The directive could be expanded to include other military vessels named for prominent American civil rights figures, said people familiar with internal discussions.
