STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police made the gruesome discovery of a man’s torso floating off Manhattan near Governors Island in the East River on Wednesday. According to the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, the NYPD Harbor Unit spotted a suitcase containing the remains around 5:30 p.m.

The remains of a body were found Wednesday inside a suitcase floating in the East River, police said. The grizzly discovery came after the suitcase was spotted around 5:30 p.m. drifting near Governors Island, cops said. Members of the NYPD Harbor Unit recovered the case and brought it to Pier 16 on South St. near John St. in the Financial District.

The gruesome discovery was made when the NYPD Harbor Unit retrieved the suitcase, which contained a man's torso, in the East River south of Manhattan.
