Tesla's abuse of statistics to make misleading claims about safety are nothing new: in 2017, Ars found out that Tesla's claims about Autopilot reducing crashes was not at all backed by data, which in fact showed the driver assist actually increased crash rates.

Tesla Inc. hasn’t done enough to protect against drivers misusing its Autopilot system, a safety expert testified at a trial over a 2019 fatal collision.

The confidential settlement was disclosed ahead of a separate trial related to another fatal crash involving its driver-assistance system.
