What steels can be used to strike a flint - Bushcraft USA Forums
Mar 24, 2016 · One of my favorite scenes in Jeremiah Johnson is when he was struggling to get a fire going with flint and steel. Just when he thinks he has it, the snow falls on his fire lay and snuffs it out. When I think about what our forefathers went through, it makes me glad that I am an amateur experamental archeologists rather than someone who stakes ...

Oct 28, 2011 · Flint is very rare, i have to go digging in old tree holes and quarries to even find one tiny piece. But if you find a good piece of quarts or any other rock with a decent angle on the sides then it can be used to throw sparks from steel.
Flint River Chert, is it in nodule form, embedded in limestone?

My favorite spots were all clear cut. Still love the Flint ...

I've found plenty, quite a bit in the form of Ute or Cheyenne arrowheads, look in low lying juniper-pinon scrub, anywhere you think a Ute would have liked to live, they focused around deposits of flint/chert it seems.
