WINGATE – The Wingate Bulldogs captured their first South Atlantic Conference championship since 2017, stifling 19th-ranked Carson-Newman's potent rushing attack in a 28-13 victory Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium.

Wingate was second in the Learfield Cup standings after the fall. All told, Bulldog teams finished second, third and eighth (times two) in national competitions. The Bulldogs handily dispatched a pair of higher-ranked teams – No. 14 Virginia Union (32-7) and No. 7 Benedict (23-6) – to reach the final eight, where the Bulldogs fell to West Florida. Wingate finished the season 11-3, registering a program record for wins in a season.
